East Arkansas Family Health Care Center
West Memphis, Arkansas (2014)
The new East Arkansas Family Health Center is a 35,420 sq. ft. multi-specialty healthcare facility that provides lower income residents, of the Mississippi Delta, access to a high level of healthcare that otherwise would not be accessible to them. The design incorporates planning concepts that facilitate the movement of users, both medical and social, through their respective areas in a highly efficient manner.
The design of the EAFHC revolves around a common waiting area from which users circulate to various specialty clinics. The specialty clinics are also accessible by staff from service corridors which create an efficient user flow, provider flow, and security. The common waiting area also is the main focal point of the building. This space runs the entire length of the building and is terminated by 30’ curtain walls to the east and west, offering views to the surrounding forest as well as views into the interior. The entry is marked by a soaring canopy that slopes down towards the entry and then penetrates into the main common space. The materials chosen for this project were done so with the intent to give space both a warm and welcoming as well as clean and crisp aesthetic. The wood on the ceiling warms the space while the cold tile gives the user the feeling of cleanliness desired in a healthcare facility.
